Jaelen Johnston reflects on performance at Friday on the Frontier
MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. – As the sun set on the flight line, Jaelen Johnston, local country music artist, performed a free concert for Airmen and their families during Friday on the Frontier, Oct. 23.
Johnston is no stranger to McConnell. He was born in Derby and also worked in construction for the Air National Guard's 184th Wing before beginning his music career.
“It’s always great to come back and see everybody here,” Johnston said. “It’s like playing a show in my living room for my family back at home.”
Johnston credits his love and the start of his musical career to his grandparents, who gave him his first guitar when he was 16 years old for the holidays.
“My grandpa taught me my first few chords and it just went from there,” said Johnston.
Johnston was the runner-up on NBC’s The Voice - Season 27. Due to the exposure from the show, Johnston was able to pursue his dream of doing music full time.
“To be able to give back to the people of McConnell for something like this means everything,” Johnston said. “I could tell how family oriented McConnell was from working here and they’ve never made me feel like anything less than that.”
Johnston performed his original songs and covers of other artists while also periodically interacting with Airmen and their families during the evening.
“As always Team McConnell and the local community dedicated countless hours to preparing an exceptional air show for Wichita,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jahrod Cyrus, 22nd Air Refueling Wing, Wing Staff Agency senior enlisted leader. “Bringing a homegrown star like Jaelen was the perfect thank you to the team and an incredible representation of the Air Capital of the world.”
Friday on the Frontier was part of the Frontiers in Flight Air Show and Open House, which is hosted by McConnell every two years as a way of bringing the community and military further together. It also served as a way for Airmen to enjoy the air acts and concert before opening the base to thousands of people for the airshow.
